Personal Fall Protection – Workers will be protected by standard guardrails, personal fall protection (full-body harness, lanyard, and anchorage point), or safety nets when working at heights 6’ and above. Body belts will not be used as personal fall protection but may be used as a positioning device.
Machinery and Mechanized Equipment – Machinery and mechanized equipment will be inspected by a competent person before being allowed to operate on the project site. All operators will be qualified by experience, specific training class, or certification. Mechanized equipment will be equipped with back-up alarms and portable fire extinguishers. Riding on equipment will be prohibited. Moving parts of machinery will be guarded or the hazard area barricaded with tape.
Cranes – Cranes will be inspected by a competent person before being allowed to operate on the project site. All operators will be qualified by experience, specific training class, or certification. Operator’s manual, log book, and load chart will be in the cab at all times (if available). Out-riggers will be extended fully and floats will bear on adequate blocking when used. All wheels will be off the ground when the crane is in use and the rear swing radius of the crane’s rotating superstructure will be barricaded.
Electrical/Control of Hazardous Energy – Electrical work will be performed by electricians qualified by experience, specific training class, or certification. Live parts of wiring or equipment will be guarded. Flexible cords will be inspected on a daily basis for plugs, proper splices, and damage. Receptacle outlets providing temporary power will have ground-fault circuit interrupters. Electrical circuits and equipment will be de-energized before maintenance or repair work is performed. Lockout/tagout procedures will be used and all affected employees will be notified.
Welding and Cutting – Welding and cutting will be performed by operators qualified through experience, specific training class, or certification. Equipment will be inspected before work begins. All operations will be ventilated (natural or mechanical) and compressed gas cylinders secured in an upright position. Compatible fire extinguishing equipment will be located in the operation’s immediate vicinity. Frames of arc welders will be grounded, and cables and current-carrying parts fully insulated. Welding cable will be uncoiled and spread-out before use.
Housekeeping – Housekeeping will be performed on a daily basis. Stairways and passageways will be kept free of materials, supplies, and obstructions. Tools, materials, extension cords, hoses, or debris will not become tripping hazards. Protruding nails will be removed, hammered-in, or bent over flush with the wood. Accumulation of flammable and combustible liquids will be prohibited and all spills will be cleaned-up immediately. Brush, weeds, and long grass will be kept down.
